Hello All,
I am seeking to assess the viability of a potential new nationwide
recycling venture for UK libraries. CILIP suggested the members of this
group might be able to assist me. We would be looking at adapting a very
successful model used by over 750 American libraries which is free,
supports literacy charities and potentially income-providing. We would be
very interested in your input as it is our aim to provide the best
possible service to the UK library community.
If you have a couple of minutes to complete the short questionnaire below
and return it to me, I would appreciate it. All questions are optional
but the more you can tell us, the better.
Finally, I am new to list posting so I hope my 'etiquette' is correct!
Many thanks for your assistance,
Hannah Smith

Library Questionnaire:
1) Name:
Library:
2) Roughly how many books does your library need to dispose of
monthly/annually?
3) Do you currently have arrangements to ensure they are recycled? If so,
are they sent for pulping or for resale? Does it cost you anything?
4) Does your library currently make any money from sale of surplus stock -
either on site or through an intermediary?
5) Which recycling/resale organisations are you aware of that you don't
use? Why don't you use them?
6) Would you be interested in an organisation that would remove your
unwanted books on demand at no cost and return a percentage of net sales
of any books sold to your library?
7) The organisation would also support literacy-orientated charities. Are
there any in particular that you would like to see represented?
8) Do you have any other comments or questions?
For more information on the model we are hoping to adapt to suit the UK,
please see the link below. This is a 'Welcome Packet' for US libraries
describing the service provided. Changes would be made to suit the UK
market but it should give you a general idea of what we are hoping to
propose. I would appreciate any comments.
