At Bangor we also started using the ILL module many years ago, even
before ILL records became virtual (I believe virtual records were
first used by INN-Reach). We used a somewhat antiquated Lancaster
system previously and had to choose between upgrading it and adopting
the Innovative?s ILL module.
Although my knowledge of the Lancaster system is rusty, I don?t think
Innovative?s ILL module will ever match the Lancaster system?s
functionality as far as ILL transactions themselves and the handling
of the British Library?s idiosyncratic procedures are concerned. As
Martin has suggested its strength is the fact it is integrated with
the circulation module and the rest of the Innovative system ? no
separate patron database to maintain, no need for a separate server or
backup arrangements, ILL notices are sent along with other circulation
notices, etc.
One thing that probably has not changed to this day is its weakness in
tracking the progress and updating the status between the time a
request is sent and it is satisfied. This may be due to the fact that
in the US the majority of libraries use the OCLC ILL system which has
its own request routing and tracking system.
Considering the small number of potential users in the UK and
elsewhere, I think the Innovative ILL module has served us well.
