I'll send Part 2 out this afternoon to hopefully soothe some wounds....

Hi,
I agree with everyone's comments about this change. I am confident that Sara will be taking all of these comments on board to inform future policy for HK journals. I also want to thank her for agreeing to post this information to the list knowing that it would generate such comments.
As we were the library in the UK which found our previously online only journals had all got renewed as print only for 2008 I just want to publicly thank Sara Cooper for all her effort in the last few weeks in getting this issue resolved for us and for making sure that we don't lose online access in the interim whilst Ebsco made the additional payments to upgrade our existing subscriptions to print/online. We were aware that if online only subscriptions were terminated that all online access would be withdrawn.
I hadn't been aware that Human Kinetics had changed its policy for 2008 and had received no communication to this effect and had instructed our agent, Ebsco, to renew our subscriptions as online only for 2008. I did visit their site when doing the 2008 renewal instructions for our agent, but didn't find any information there about this change of policy. I only became aware that there could be a problem with our renewals and our online access for this publisher when I noticed that there was no VAT for these subscriptions on our Ebsco invoices.
We are currently seeking clarification from Ebsco as to why our online only subscriptions defaulted to print only rather than print/online and why we weren't alerted that online only was no longer an option.
From experience over many years I've often found that when a publisher changes its subscriptions options (or the subscription options change because of a transfer), the first year of that change can often cause problems with the renewal of some/all of that publisher's titles. When Duke University Press decoupled it's print and electronic subscriptions in 2006 and provided the following 3 options - print only, print/online and online only - they noticed a heavy uptake of the print only format (40%) and questioned on liblicense (10/07/06) whether had been a deliberate choice by librarians or a default on agent's systems. They then contacted the print only subscribers to make sure that no one was losing access inadvertently.
I give full marks to Duke University Press for having looked at how it's subscriptions were renewed when it made these changes and for taking the steps to make sure no one suffered from loss of access if their subscriptions had defaulted from print/online to print.
Cheers
Lesley

Human Kinetics and online journals
This is a message for institutional subscribers to Human Kinetics journals. Following a misunderstanding with a library in the UK, we felt that this notice might be useful.
For many years librarians have purchased online journals from Human Kinetics. But when they cease to pay for the online journals, their access to the servers which holds the data also severs. We have always encouraged librarians to purchase back-up print copies. In order to 'force' the issue, in 2008, Human Kinetics prevented institutions from purchasing online only. Online Only ceased to be an option for institutional subscribers. Instead Human Kinetics offered Print, and Print & Online at the same price.
If your institution has ordered Online Only from your Subs Agent, your Subs Agent will not have fulfilled this order for Human Kinetics. If you have set a default for your Subs Agent, i.e. Print Only, then your Subs Agent is likely to have ordered that for you instead. If this is the case, this can be easily rectified by emailing [log in to unmask] who will ensure your online access is not terminated.
Many thanks for your time in this matter, and apologise for any confusion caused.
Sara Cooper,
Human Kinetics.
