Subject: [Sar] CFP for LASA 2009 in Rio de Janeiro "Religion, Inequality, and the Public Sphere"
We are accepting abstracts for a double panel on religion, inequality, and the public sphere in Latin America for the 2009 LASA (Latin Ameican Studies Association) conference in Rio de Janeiro (June 11-14, 2009). We have included the panel abstract below. If interested, please send a 50-70 word abstract by March 18 to the following:
[log in to unmask] (Anna Pagano)
[log in to unmask] (Steve Selka)
Here is the panel abstract:
Religion, Inequality and the Public Sphere
This panel examines diverse intersections between religion and the public sphere in Latin America. The papers address religious engagements with social movements, electoral campaigns, the popular media, state institutions and public policy. The panel highlights how religious groups confront various forms of inequality through these public engagements and emphasizes that, contrary to the predictions of the secularization thesis, religion remains a vibrant force in the public sphere today.
Thank you,
Anna Pagano
