SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH FELLOW / RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSTS 
Positions are initially for two-years (full time) 

We are seeking to appoint two Research Fellows and one Research Assistant 
to join our growing social science team within the Barcelona Centre for 
International Health Research (www.cresib.cat).


Research Fellow Position (Palliative Care)
The research fellow will work on projects related to palliative care and 
culture in Europe and in Africa, and as required on other social science 
projects being conducted within the department. This position will involve 
literature searching, designing questionnaires and data collection, data 
entry and analysis (qualitative and quantitative), writing of progress 
reports and project updates, contributing to the writing-up and 
dissemination of study findings. Other tasks will include assistance in 
overseeing projects; liaison with research partners, file management; 
arrangement of travel; organisation of teleconferences, meetings and 
workshops. 

Applicants need to be able to work independently and as part of a multi-
disciplinary project team, cope with a variable workload and work 
effectively and flexibly under pressure of deadlines. They will also need 
to have an interest in qualitative research and be willing to travel.

Applicants must have:
•	A postgraduate qualification in a social science subject, 
preferably with a health focus
•	Experience of qualitative data collection and analysis, including 
the use of software such as NVIVO or Atlas.ti
•	Proficiency in MS Word, Access and Excel
•	Experience with search tools for academic literature and confidence 
with searching the internet
•	Experience with bibliographic software such as EndNote or Reference 
Manager
•	Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
•	Strong writing skills, including writing for publication
•	Confidence to work independently, and in sensitive contexts
•	Fluency in English
•	An interest in international public health/ qualitative research

previously worked in palliative care settings and are able to source

Research Fellow Position (MiP)
The successful candidate will be working on social science projects within 
the MiP (Malaria in Pregnancy) consortium (www.mip-consortium.org/). 
Projects will address the social and cultural dimensions of malaria and 
other illnesses in pregnancy and will take place in a variety of sites in 
Africa, Asia, Papua New Guinea and Latin America. Extensive travel to these 
sites will be required. This position will involve training of local 
fieldworks, overseeing research projects, qualitative data collection and 
analysis and assisting with publications.

Applicants must have:
•	A postgraduate qualification in a social science subject, 
preferably with a health focus
•	Experience of qualitative data collection and analysis, including 
the use of software such as NVIVO or Atlas.ti
•	Strong writing skills, including writing for publication
•	Confidence to work independently, and in challenging settings
•	Strong interpersonal skills
•	An interest in international public health / interest in 
qualitative research
•	Fluency in English
•	Willingness to travel

Portuguese, have training and/or teaching experience, have previously 
worked in non-western settings and are able to source further funding will

Research Assistant
This person will assist in the research and administration of social 
science projects being conducted within the department. Research tasks will 
include literature searching and assistance with data entry and analysis 
(qualitative and quantitative). Administration tasks will include 
assistance in overseeing projects; liaising with partners in Europe, 
Africa, Asia, Papua New Guinea and India; file management; arranging 
travel; organising teleconferences, meetings and workshops (including 
minute taking). 

Applicants must have:
•	Fluency in English
•	A degree in a social science
•	Practical experience of qualitative research
•	Experience of creating and maintaining databases
•	Experience of computer packages such as Word, Excel, Access
•	Good communication skills
•	Administration experience
•	An interest in health / development / policy

Applicants that can communicate in Spanish or Catalan, have knowledge of 
NVIVO (or similar) and/or SPSS, have experience working with budgets, and 
have a postgraduate qualification will be at an advantage.
