Hello listers
Thanks for all the list advice which has even morphed into something of a discussion. I remember working with my grandfather about six months ago to build a deck over concrete in a pool we inherited when we bought our current house. Measuring up, buying materials, working with the tools (hammer drills, circular saws) and putting the whole thing together, I thought, was a great introduction to material thinking albeit the design side was limited by basic construction concerns. Buying a rain tank recently and fitting the pipes to the house and setting it up on a concrete pad and then solving leaking problems was another experience I find in different ways to be bringing into discussions with students about their design projects. The same goes for trying to implement sustainable gardening with my wife in drought affected/water restricted Australia - buying native plants, planting vegetables and dealing with clayey soil and trying to achieve a balance of efficiency, aesthetics, and benefits. So, I understand there's no need to go do a degree to learn something about design and material construction but my aim is somewhat different. Anyway, thanks for all the ideas. Gavin
