Job description
The Department of Media and Culture Studies (MCS) offers an
interdisciplinary and lively work atmosphere with a young, dynamic team.
Courses are taught in Dutch and English. The successful candidate will
be required to teach in Dutch after one year, with suitable language
training being provided as needed.
You will teach courses and conduct internationally visible, innovative
research within the Bachelor and MA programmes in Musicology and in New
Media/Digital Culture. Particular emphasis will be placed on the
interface between musicology and new media/digital culture. You will
supervise graduate and undergraduate theses and participate actively in
the administration of the department. A secondary research area in
either musicology or media studies, while not a requirement, will be a
distinct asset.
Qualifications
Applicants require a PhD, teaching experience on the Bachelor and MA
level, and must demonstrate affinity with the core themes of the
teaching and research programmes in Musicology and New Media/Digital
Culture. Core themes in Media studies at Utrecht are comparative media
studies, popular culture, identity and participation, communication and
technology. Musicology, while continuing to build on its inherited
strengths (early music; Dutch music), wishes to establish a new research
area focusing on music’s performative qualities, and the impact of
digital media on music.
The successful candidate will contribute decisively to the
implementation of this strategy and therefore will be intimately
familiar with ongoing debates regarding the impact of digitization on
the production, distribution and consumption of music in any of its
manifestations, combined with solid expertise in musicology. Possible
research topics include, but are not limited to: online music cultures,
internet radio stations, the impact of iPods, identity formation via
mobile phone ring tones, video game music. The successful candidate will
have an excellent scholarly reputation and form an integral part of the
global research networks in the fields of both new media/digital culture
and musicology. Research in New Media/Digital Culture is housed within
the Research Group Media Studies, research in Musicology within the
Research Group Musicology.
Both are part of the Research Institute for History and Culture (OGC).
Terms of employment
We offer a two-year contract on the level of Assistant Professor
(full-time, 1,0 fte) with the possibility of tenure following a
