Faculty of Humanities, Utrecht University

Utrecht University has developed into one of Europe’s largest and most

prominent institutes for research and education. The faculty of

Humanities, with nearly 7.000 students and nearly 900 staff members,

offers an inspiring and dynamic working environment. Our research and

education programmes focus on culture, history, arts, literature, media,

language, philosophy and theology, covering the period from classical

antiquity to the present day. We pay special attention to

interdisciplinary and international collaboration, the use of new media,

and high-quality teaching and research. The research programmes are

organised in four institutes:

    * Research Institute for History and Culture (OGC),

    * Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS (UiL OTS),

    * ZENO Research Institute for Philosophy,

    * Research Institute for Theology and Religious Studies (INTEGON).

The Utrecht University Graduate School of Humanities monitors and

guarantees the outstanding quality of education programmes for Research

Master and PhD students.

The Department of Media and Culture Studies (MCS) organises and

contributes to courses in the Bachelor's programmes Theatre, Film and

Television Studies, Communication and Information Studies and Musicology

as well as the Master's programmes Comparative Women’s Studies, Film and

Television Studies, Arts Policy and Management, Musicology, New Media

and Digital Culture and Theatre Studies.

The Department of Media and Culture Studies (MCS) has a vacancy for an:

Assistant Professor in Musicology and New Media/Digital Culture (1,0 fte)

Job description

The Department of Media and Culture Studies (MCS) offers an

interdisciplinary and lively work atmosphere with a young, dynamic team.

Courses are taught in Dutch and English. The successful candidate will

be required to teach in Dutch after one year, with suitable language

training being provided as needed.

You will teach courses and conduct internationally visible, innovative

research within the Bachelor and MA programmes in Musicology and in New

Media/Digital Culture. Particular emphasis will be placed on the

interface between musicology and new media/digital culture. You will

supervise graduate and undergraduate theses and participate actively in

the administration of the department. A secondary research area in

either musicology or media studies, while not a requirement, will be a

distinct asset.

Qualifications

Applicants require a PhD, teaching experience on the Bachelor and MA

level, and must demonstrate affinity with the core themes of the

teaching and research programmes in Musicology and New Media/Digital

Culture. Core themes in Media studies at Utrecht are comparative media

studies, popular culture, identity and participation, communication and

technology. Musicology, while continuing to build on its inherited

strengths (early music; Dutch music), wishes to establish a new research

area focusing on music’s performative qualities, and the impact of

digital media on music.

The successful candidate will contribute decisively to the

implementation of this strategy and therefore will be intimately

familiar with ongoing debates regarding the impact of digitization on

the production, distribution and consumption of music in any of its

manifestations, combined with solid expertise in musicology. Possible

research topics include, but are not limited to: online music cultures,

internet radio stations, the impact of iPods, identity formation via

mobile phone ring tones, video game music. The successful candidate will

have an excellent scholarly reputation and form an integral part of the

global research networks in the fields of both new media/digital culture

and musicology. Research in New Media/Digital Culture is housed within

the Research Group Media Studies, research in Musicology within the

Research Group Musicology.

Both are part of the Research Institute for History and Culture (OGC).

Terms of employment

We offer a two-year contract on the level of Assistant Professor

(full-time, 1,0 fte) with the possibility of tenure following a

successful performance review at the end of the second year. Salary

range: between a minimum of € 3,129.- (scale 11 of the Dutch

Universities Conditions of Employment) and a maximum of € 4,868.- (scale

12 of the Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment) gross per month

on a full-time basis.
