medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Christopher,
I realize that the images would be impressed at the final stages of
bread preparation. But I was just thinking about what sort of images
a baker might have been using on bread at the time the windows were
"painted".
As to whether it is being kneaded or not, if you compare the the
images where the dough is being kneaded, they are handling the dough
very differently (typing without the images in front of me, but that
is the way I remember it). In the lh image the "baker" (for that is
what we assume he is) really is basically laying a huge "lump" of
dough down in a container (as noted on the CC list)---not handling it
on a surface. So----indeed, what is going on? (Any thoughts about
the representation of the head/face?) Maybe the confraternity thing
mentioned by Jim is operative, but aren't most of the other images
associated with trades and crafts in the windows just the individuals
going about aspects of the trade/craft?
More tangential thinking, or something like that
best
