medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Roland, Are you sure Judas is there? If so, what is Matthias doing there? Are you sure Jude Thaddeus isn't the one you identify as Judas? Showing Judas at all except at Last Supper or alone is most unusual. And showing him as you describe is incredible. Apostles are frequently depicted with the instruments of their martyrdom. I've been unable to discover either how Saint Jude was martyred (if at all) or what his statue at Saint John Lateran looks like.
Anyone else?

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello,
Maybe the whole matter has nothing to do with religion but with art or
better construction ot the tumba.
Examining the figures and the script on the stone I realized last week that
there may have been various skilled craft at work.
Take the art of writing letters (of the names). St. Wendelin (the only one
with an "s" in front of his name) has the "S" crossed by another line which
makes no sense if it was not a writing for "St" in one letter or two signs on
the spot of one letter. Take "Iudas" and "Iohannes" but "Jacob" - thus first
two with an "I" but the other one with a "J". And a weird "J" - the upper part
as long as the downgoing part. It seems as if the painter of the names had no
idea what he was painting.
Now take Iudas (Iskarioth). His symbol should be a purse. But instead of
that the figure carrying his name wears a book (like all the others) and a sword
in his left hand pointing upward.
Maybe they displayed Paulus instead of Judas but the painter of the names
mixed it up completely. And gave the figure which may be Jakobus the younger
(James the less) the name "Iudas". Or years or centuries later the letters had
to be re-painted and they screwed it up then being confused about the
presence of Paulus as I got.
It may not be the best explanation but the best I could find :-)
Yours

PS: By the way: In case someone of you wants to come to St. Wendel and see
the original, just tell me, and I'll be happy to show you around. We are
located nearly in the middle between the ancient town of Trier at the Moselle River
and Ramstein Air Force Base near K'town, Germany.
