medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Rose Malik <[log in to unmask]>
> I wonder if you can help me. I'm writing a paper on early medieval
communication between monasteries/abbeys in Britain, specifically during the
periods 6-8th century England, and concentrating on how one monastery or abbey
got to hear about meetings such as Whitby synod or news from one monastery to
another.
one "vehicle" of communication was the circulation of what the French call
"rouleaux des morts" ("mortuary rolls"? i've not seen the English term) which
were carried from house to house, as a means of solliciting prayers for
deceased brothers.
obviously, more than rolls were communicated --we may assume that biscuits,
buns and perhaps even whole loaves of information were, as well.
many of them were published by Delisle in the 19th c.
Delisle, Léopold, ed. Rouleaux des morts du IXe au XVe siècle, recueillis et
pub. pour la Société de l'histoire de France par Léopold Delisle.
Paris, Mme. Ve. J. Renouard, 1866.
Series: Société de l'histoire de France. Publications in octavo. 135
(and i believe that his book has an introcution which might be useful), but
the Academie des Inscriptions & Belles-Lettres is underwriting a publication
of all known French examples by the excellent scholar, Jean Dufour:
Recueil des rouleaux des morts : (VIIIe siècle-vers 1536) / publié sous la
direction de Jean Favier par Jean Dufour.
Paris: Diffusion de Boccard, 2005-
Series: Recueil des historiens de la France. Obituaires. Série in-4o ; t. 8.
three chronologically-arranged vols have been published so far, which takes
them up to the end of the m.a., but i believe that there is an introduction
volume yet to come.
there were a *few* English houses which had these mortuary exchanges with the
French, but perhaps not a great many.
i have no idea whether the English rolls have been published.
of course, finding *any* sort of sources which survive from the 6th-8th c. is
a rather dodgy proposition, Up Front.
