Dear colleagues,
a PhD project at Muenster University, Germany, is available in the field of
provenance research. Please pass on details to anyone who may
be interested.
Yours sincerely,
Heinrich Bahlburg
The Department of Geology and Palaeontology at the Westfaelische
Wilhelms-Universitaet Muenster, Germany, invites applications for a
Ph.D. project
to start on or around June 1, 2008.
The Archean to Paleoproterozoic transition as recovered in the FAR DEEP
cores: LA-ICP-MS U-Pb geochronology of detrital zircons and accompanying
provenance analysis of siliciclastic sedimentary rocks
The successful candidate will perform a provenance analysis of Late Archean
– Early Proterozoic siliciclastic deposits recovered in the FAR DEEP drill
cores in Arctic Russia. The FAR DEEP drilling project is part of the
International Continental Drilling Project (ICDP). The study will involve
limited sedimentological field work in Arctic Russia, core description and
sampling in the FAR DEEP core repository in Trondheim, Norway. Laboratory
based methods focus on U-Pb geochronology of detrital zircons by Laser
Ablation ICP-MS, and will be combined with single grain geochemical analysis
of heavy minerals (tourmaline, rutile) by electron microprobe. The
analytical work will be performed in cooperation with the Mineralogy
Department at Muenster University.
The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft) for an initial 2 years, with a potential extension
to a third year. The salary is based on a German BAT IIa/2 (civil service)
equivalent.
Applicants should have a Master's Degree or equivalent in Earth Sciences,
and experience in research techniques preferably in the sedimentology,
petrography and geochemistry of clastic sedimentary rocks. The project will
be realized in cooperation with an international consortium of scientists, a
good working knowledge of English is therefore required.
The Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universitaet is an equal opportunity employer.
The deadline for applications is April 15, 2008. Applications including a
curriculum vitae and the name and address of at least one academic referee
should be directed to:
