Dear Colleagues,
I am interested to know whether any laboratories routinely comment on raised Vitamin B12 results. If so, please could you send me the comment that you would make on the following set of results obtained for a 50 year old female GP patient with a history of hypertension ?
Serum Vitamin B12 >2000 ng/L ( 175 to 900 )
Total Protein 72 g/L ( 60 to 80 )
Albumin 42 g/L ( 35 to 50 )
Alkaline Phosphatase 101 iu/L ( 40 to 110 )
Bilirubin 9 umol/L ( 3 to 20 )
Aspartate Transaminase 19 iu/L ( 10 to 35 )
Serum Folate 6.1 ug/l ( 3.1 to 17.5 )
Haemoglobin 14.7 g/dl ( 12.0 to 15.0 )
Mean Cell Volume 100.7 fl
The Vitamin B12 was checked on a subsequent sample 2 weeks later and was again >2000 ng/L (Roche Modular E170 method).
The patient is not prescribed any medication containing Vitamin B12, and has no evidence of renal or myeloproliferative disease.
