WORLD ARCHAEOLOGY 41(1) - Agricultural Innovation
(editor: Marijke van der Veen)
Call for Papers
Deadline for submission of papers: 1 May 2009, publication date March 2010.
Innovation refers to the process of making improvements and/or solving problems by introducing something new. In terms of farming this includes new techniques (e.g. animal traction, ploughing, milling), new practices (e.g. irrigation, terracing), and new or altered animals and crops (new breeds, new varieties). A key issue in archaeology is when do such innovations arise? What cultural, social and/or economic conditions stimulate such change? Can we recognize situations where agricultural innovation was not taken up or was actively discouraged? Can we identify whether innovation was born out of necessity, or where tradition works against innovation? And what is the long-term impact of these innovations - do they work as the catalyst for bigger changes, and if so, which ones? Papers addressing aspects of this topic, either theoretical issues or practical case studies, are invited.
If you are interested in contributing a paper to this issue, please contact me ([log in to unmask]). The deadline for submissions is 1 May 2009, though earlier submissions are encouraged. Contributions to the journal are normally no more than 5000 words, including bibliography. All contributions to the journal will be refereed by at least two academic referees and the final decision on inclusion in the volume will be taken by the editorial board. The aim is to have a good variety of papers in terms of approach, geographical and chronological range.
