Hi
We don't have many examples of older versions in our repository yet, but
would aim to keep them in there (assuming publisher agreements with the
author don't require removal of earlier versions). We do have
horizontal and other related versions (eg working paper versions of
journal articles, conference material etc) and we would aim to keep all
of these too (once deposited).
ArXiv has an elegant solution to the presentation of current versions
along with earlier versions - the repository uses a record id numbering
scheme which attaches a suffix to metadata records for earlier versions
and makes the current version the most prominent, though linked to all
previous versions:
See http://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ex/0207031 as an example.
The STFC repository is also well worth a look as it uses FRBR which
enables hierarchical links between versions of research material to be
established: http://epubs.cclrc.ac.uk/index
Best wishes

Subject: Multiple versions/records?
Hi,
As I understand IRs they are meant to be true repositories of research
outputs. Any version of full text entered should be retained and if/when
a newer version of the full text is entered it should be as a new item
with a new item number. However, this leads to duplication of titles (if
not content) and could cause a problem when the IR is used as the source
for other services like staff publication lists and annual publication
lists, etc.
How many UK IRs keep to the strict repository rule and retain all
versions? If you don't do you edit/update existing records or duplicate
and delete older records when new versions are added?
