The University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks an anthropological
archaeologist for the position of Associate Director of UMass
Archaeological Services (UMAS). This position will be funded as a 3 year,
full-time lecturer position starting Fall 2008, with possibility for
renewal. PhD required at time of appointment.

UMAS is a consulting firm with expertise in a wide variety of cultural
resource management projects. For nearly thirty years it has provided the
university with an important platform for outreach and a training ground
and source of employment for undergraduate and graduate students. The
successful applicant will have a strong background in all aspects of
cultural resource management, including proposal and report writing,
creating and managing budgets, supervising personnel, data management,
public outreach, and working with diverse stakeholders.

The successful hire will also have a research and teaching concentration
in Northeastern North America and will teach two archaeology courses per
year and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students. These courses
may include (1) Archaeology and Prehistory (Anthropology 102), a large
enrollment, General Education course, (2) North American Archaeology (Anth
369), and/or (3) mid-level courses for majors and/or graduate students in
a methodological or technical specialty, such as landscape archaeology,
archaeobotany, computer applications in archaeology, GIS, lithic or
ceramic analysis, etc.

Furthermore, the department is looking for candidates who:

• Have demonstrated excellence in classroom teaching • Are engaged in
research that complements departmental strengths • Are committed to
developing a robust cooperative relationship with students and faculty
colleagues • Demonstrated commitment to engagement with descendant
communities

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is the flagship campus of the 5-
campus publicly funded UMass system. It is located in the Connecticut
River Valley, 90 miles west of Boston and 180 miles northeast of New York
City. UMass Amherst hosts nearly 19,000 undergraduate students and 5,600
graduate students, and nearly 900 tenure system faculty. The Department of
Anthropology has 20 faculty, 175 undergraduate majors and 82 graduate
students in our MA/ PhD program. The Department of Anthropology is
dedicated to increasing the number of faculty and students from
traditionally underrepresented groups.

UMass Amherst anthropology faculty works closely with their counterparts
in the area private colleges (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and
Smith) in curricular planning. The faculty is unionized. Benefits include
a choice of either the state pension plan or the optional retirement
program (faculty and state contributions invested with TIAA-CREF, Lincoln
or VALIC), where new employees contribute 9% of the first $30,000 of
salary on a pre-tax basis. There are ten different health insurance
options, where the state pays 75% of the premium. Salary range: $52,000-
55,000 per year, dependent upon qualifications and experience. There are
also possibilities for additional compensation through grants and
contracts.

UMass Amherst prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts does not allow health insurance benefits
for domestic partners, but does provide them with such benefits as tuition
waivers for the University system, family sick and medical leave, and use
of certain facilities. Under the Massachusetts constitution, gay and
lesbian couples who are or become residents of Massachusetts are allowed
to marry and then the spouse of the employee may also enjoy health
benefits.

The University of Massachusetts is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity
Employer. Women and members of minority groups are encouraged to apply.
Send a letter describing interests and qualifications, a CV, and listing
of 3 referees with full contact information to Ralph Faulkingham, Chair,
Archaeology Search Committee, Department of Anthropology, UMass, Amherst,
MA 01003. Application screening commences on February 25, 2008, and
continues until the position is filled.
