Details of the new Irish National Strategic Archaeological Research
Programme (INSTAR) are now available on the Heritage Council website.
The Heritage Council in collaboration with the Department of Environment,
Heritage and Local Government is pleased to announce the establishment of
a new strategic archaeological research fund. The fund for 2008 will be of
the order of €1 million.
The Programme was long sought and is aimed to channel focused research and
the dissemination of its results into both the public and expert arenas.
Essentially, the funding Programme will ensure that the large amounts of
archaeological work ongoing in Ireland at present, much of which is
undertaken in the context of the National Development Plan, is translated
into knowledge about Ireland’s past.
In summary this collaborative archaeological research programme aims to
bring about change in the quality of research undertaken by the
consultancy sector (‘industry’) in co-operation with the higher
education and the state sectors. Such a strategic programme will address
key archaeological issues, build research capacity, and address the issue
of unpublished archaeological excavations. Research consortia must be
formed (i.e. two or more) from the following groups: the archaeological
consultancy sector, academic institutions on the island of Ireland,
international academic and research bodies, and State bodies.
Closing date for appplications is Friday 7th March 2008. All details are
available from the Heritage Council website www.heritagecouncil.ie
