Dear All
I have returned to see a number of posts on Gender, following on from
the Alien Abduction posts of last week, and felt I should also
contribute my thoughts on gender.
As some of you may remember I have been considering issues of gender
inclusivity since 2006 and have been proposing a dimensional model as an
alternative to the more common categorical modelling of gender. The
dimensional model is constructed from the three core aspects of gender
definition which comes out of the main texts, which are: Sex, Sexuality
and Gender. What this model seeks to provide for is consideration of the
contextual and ageing changes to the perception of gender, and the
possible fluidity of its performativity.
It is proposed by means of the model that the individual's identity is
declared by a volume. As the perception and performativity of gender may
change over time this volume may change in proportion and position
within the dimensions of the model.
This leads to the thought that if aliens did abduct a sample of 'males',
on return to their own planet they might decide that some of them seemed
to have changed to 'females'.
I tried to attach the model but the server bounces the e-mail, so sorry
folks no attachment.
Regards
Kev

Terry,
While Jacques Lacan's 'Symbolic Logic of Sexuation' has been found
to induce herpes zoster opthalmicus in some design PhD students,
the wee 75 page paperback by the late Elizabeth Wright of Girton
College Cambridge entitled 'Lacan and Postfeminism' Icon Books (UK)
2000 or Totem Books (US) 2001 has been known to help the gender
blind design student to see again.
Enjoy! Jouis!
'Aye,
Bruce
