MPhil Studentship in Engineering Design
Department Of Engineering, University of Cambridge, UK
Title: Engineering Design: Assessing Design Management Capabilities
*Project summary:*
The Cambridge Engineering Design Centre (EDC - www.edc.eng.cam.ac.uk/
<http://www.edc.eng.cam.ac.uk/> ) has a post available for a Masters
student to research in the field of design and business process
innovation management with a particular focus on assessing design
management capabilities.
The project will initially concentrate on reviewing existing methods and
approaches to assess design and business processes innovation
capabilities in product development organisations. Various ways of
assessing capabilities will be systematically compared, e.g. checklists,
maturity grids or other scorecard approaches. The project will progress
to test different methods and elicit key factors for design management
capability by conducting empirical fieldwork. Ultimately, the project is
envisaged to derive practical recommendations for application of
adequate methods based on different ‘what-if scenarios' in industry.
*Conditions:*
The applicant should have a very good BA, BEng or an equivalent degree,
preferably in Engineering or Management Science, although other
backgrounds will be considered. The candidate should expect to undertake
a range of research activities including systematic literature analysis,
fieldwork, organisation of workshops and meetings and analysis of data.
*Duration and start date:*
*The application deadline is 30 April 2008*. The duration will be one
academic year. The start date is expected to be in October of 2008.
*Funding Source:*
An EPSRC studentship for UK or EU students or industry funding may be
available, depending on the candidate's background and qualifications.
Otherwise students must be self-funded. Some "top-up" funding may be
available.
