Prof Phil Gray - 'Design thinking - the new challenge for business'
13 February 2008
17:00 – 18:00
Design thinking - the new challenge for business
Designers think positively and are solution orientated. We imagine,
challenge, enquire, reason and visualise the future. The confidence to
create, not be afraid to make mistakes is the antidote to the tightly
managed, no errors environment typical in many businesses. Design is
now beginning to find favour as companies realise how potent it can
be. Not just in creating the next big idea but also in affecting
change in an organisation.
About the speaker
Philip Gray is the Director and Founder of Quadro Design
Graduate of the Royal College of Art – School of Industrial Design
(Engineering)
Visiting Professor for New Product Design and Development, Product
Design Research Centre, Middlesex University, London
Philip has worked in design consultancy since graduation in 1970.
Throughout his career, he has designed in many industries from high
volume consumer goods to very specialised scientific instruments,
costing millions of pounds. During the last 10 years his focus has
moved towards using design as a strategic business tool and
encouraging clients to adopt a ‘design thinking’ approach to their
business. Globalisation has meant that Quadro Consulting, lead by
Philip, has taken its ideas and processes to wider markets including
China. Philip’s extensive experience in working in the Far East has
recently earned him a place on a taskforce setup by UK Trade &
Investment (UKTI). The taskforce is made up of British design
companies that have significant international experience, particularly
in Asia with the aim of helping British designers win business in China.
Philip has published widely and has served as a keynote speaker at
many international conferences and conventions and is the holder of
several design awards including 2 British Design Council Awards, Red
Dot Award Essen Germany, IF Award Hannover Germany and CES 2002 Las
Vegas - Most Innovative Product.
His client portfolio includes 3Com, AT&T, Amersham Biosciences (now GE
Healthcare), Avilion, Bayer, Bosch Lawn and Garden, BT, Cable &
Wireless, Fuji, Heineken, Oregon Scientific, Philips, Pyrex,
Rubbermaid Commercial Products, Ryobi, Siemens, Siemens Nixdorf,
Stiga, Toshiba, Vtech, Whirlpool and many others.
