medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In Dom Pierre Miquel's _Dictionnaire symbolique des animaux_ I found:
"The author of "L'Institution des premiers moines" (published in _Les plus vieux textes du Carmel_, Le Seuil, 1945, p. 120), citing the Book of Job, sees in the onager the symbol of the hermit who lives free and independently in the solitude of the desert." Miquel divides his discussion in parts and this is specifically "Chez les Carmes."
In the medieval tradition in general, the ass is a symbol of indecision and of cowardice. For "indecision," Miquel cites "l'âne de Buridan"; for "cowardice," no citation except a vague reference to his violence towards the old lion (!) incapable of defending himself.
