medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
With regard to Bernard's diatribe, I have somewhere, and will try to ferret out, a most interesting comment on Bernard's bedazzlement by/disgust with Sugerian "excess." The author makes an analogy between Bernard's eloquent rhetorical embellishments and unnecessary - and expensive - church decoration. Of course, one may object, talk is cheap :-) It's a bit psycho-babblish but quite, IMHO, perceptive. If I may go really out of period, what the author (I'll eventually know his name) does [MG alone speaking here] is compare Bernard's attitude towards church decoration with Claude Frollo's frenzied fear and loathing (aka forbidden lust after) of Esmeralda in _Notre-Dame de Paris_.
It will take a while but I'll find it. And I'll clearly indicate what I'm about in Subject: so those not interested in such may delete unread.
