The deadline for registration to the FREE National Supporting the
Supporters II Conference is on Friday, 11 January and there are still
some places available. It may be of interest to other map
librarians/curators on this list, some of whom enjoyed the opportunity
to network at the last such event held in June 2004.
Happy New Year.

Some of you may be interested in the event outlined below. A few
members of this list attended the first 'Supporting the Supporters'
conference in 2004 and participated in discussion within a specialist
group of librarians, map curators and resource centre staff. If anyone
would like a copy of the draft programme for this second national
conference then please contact me off list.

Supporting the Supporters II
The Geography, Earth and Environmental Science (GEES) Subject Centre,
in association with the Centre for Active Learning for Geography,
Environment and Related Disciplines (CeAL) is hosting a National
Conference for Support Staff on Monday, 21 January 2008, at the
University of Gloucestershire.
Support Staff in Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences (GEES)
Departments play an important role in enhancing the student learning
experience, yet Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and networking
opportunities for this key group of staff are limited. Our last event
was exceptionally well attended and, according to delegate feedback,
highly productive. The primary aim of this second National Conference
is, therefore, to identify and to debate the issues now facing Support
Staff and to build and strengthen CPD and networking opportunities.
Highlights of this event will include Professor Mark Cleary,
Vice-Chancellor and Principal, University of Bradford providing an
overview of the key issues shaping UK Higher Education and in particular
the future of the GEES disciplines, and Professor Carolyn Roberts,
Co-Director of Gloucestershire's Centre for Active Learning sharing
ideas based on her research into career patterns and CPD opportunities
for Support Staff.
As with our previous event, we will also have specialist Support Staff
discussion and we hope you will benefit from building networks within
your own specialist area and with other support staff groups such as
Technicians, Cartographers, IT Specialists, Librarians, Resource Centre
Staff, Departmental Administrators and other similar groups.
More information can also be found at www.gees.ac.uk.
