medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I have a copy of _Montaillou_ so will try to ferret this out.
Another anecdote: I saw a TV program on vampires (once you stop laughing, please continue reading :-))) that had some interesting info about how such a strange belief came into being. It concerned precisely the matter of changes to the body after death, changes caused by decomposition. It seems that everything recedes, causing nails, hair and, more important to vampires, gums. The latter "recession" causes the canines to appear longer. Furthermore, something (what exactly, I remember not) may cause blood or something reddish to appear on the lips. I'm assuming grave robbers or others with a more respectable reason were at the business of digging up bodies.
Now, on to _Montaillou_. Hope I can remember the question and hope the book has an index!
