medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Cordelia,
There is a modern English translation of the text by Lydia Peterson in
/Connecticut Review/, Fall 2005, vol. 27.2, pp, 18-44. I believe that it
is not a complete translation, but it is fairly extensive. It used to be
online but I cannot find it at the moment.
The original Latin life by the Cistercian abbot Phillip of Clairvaux can
be found in: “Vita Elizabeth sanctimonialis in Erkenrode, Ordinis
Cisterciensis, Leodiensis dioecesis,” in Catalogus Codicum
Hagiographicorum Bibliothecae regiae Bruxellensis, Subsidia
hagiographica 1, vol 1, pt. 1 (Brussels, 1886), pp. 346-47 and 362-78.
The Middle English life appears in C. Horstmann, ed., "Prosalegenden:
Die legenden des MS. Douce 114," Anglia 8 (1885), 102-96.
Best,
Carolyn Muessig

>> I am currently teaching a course on female mysticism at Hamburg University, and one of my students wants to write a thesis about Elizabeth of Spaalbek/Herkenrode. She already found the translation of the Vita in Elizabeth Spearing, Female writings on medieval spirituality. This one is obviously from a middle english version of the vita, but I can't find either that one or the latin original (BHL Nr. 2484).
