medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The re-designation of the Octave of Christmas from Circumcision to Solemnity of Mary took place in the wake of Vatican II, specifically with the promulgation
of the new Roman calendar in 1970 or so. I'll spare the list the various theological/liturgical principles that underlay the decision. If I remember correctly,
the medieval observance of the circumcision is based on the (rather obvious) connection with the Jewish practice on the eighth day after birth. The Feast
of the Presentation was/is on 2 Feb, 40 days after Christmas. Again, I will spare the list the liturgical symbolism, which I'm sure is familiar to everyone.
1 January is a holy day of obligation for Roman Rite diocese of the United States.
