Faculty Responsibilities:
Parsons The New School for Design is seeking a full-time, principal
faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to take part
in the development of Transdisciplinary Design and Design Studies across
the University, as well as to teach graduate and undergraduate studios and
related subjects in these areas.

Parsons has been a pioneer in art and design education since it's founding
in 1896. One of the most highly regarded art and design schools in the
world, Parsons today enrolls over 3,500 students in more than 20
undergraduate and graduate degree programs and boasts a faculty of 130
fulltime and more than 1000 part time members made of professional design
practitioners and scholars. Parsons hosts a truly international student
body in its diverse, rigorous and progressive programs characterized by
curricular innovation, pioneering uses of technology, highly collaborative
and interdisciplinary approaches, a strong emphasis on social
responsibility, and a global perspective. Parsons and The New School are
embarking on an ambitious expansion of graduate programs, and central to
this effort is the development of a suite of transdisciplinary graduate
design programs. As part of The New School's commitment to project-
centered learning, these new programs will enable faculty and students to
address complex social, technological, and environmental challenges from
radically new perspectives, unbound from the constraints of traditional
disciplinary approaches.

The successful applicant is expected to make significant contributions to
developing the new graduate programs, as well as to teaching
Transdisciplinary Design in undergraduate and graduate programs across
Parsons and the New School at large. In that respect, there is a broad
range of areas that the successful applicant could teach into that may
include but are not limited to: critical design practices, design and
social research, participatory and community design, sustainable design,
design and social entrepreneurship, design research methods, emerging
technologies and their social implications, spatial and urban design,
service and systems design, media ecosystems and social networking, design
and globalization, design and international affairs, designing health care
systems, designing for security and risk management systems, and design
and humanitarian organizations and networks, and design pedagogy. The
applicant selected will teach in dynamic and vibrant, collaborative
programs involving students and faculty from across the design and art
fields (media arts, product design, fine arts, communication design,
design and technology, architecture, interior design, urban and
environmental design, etc.) as well as in liberal arts (including graduate
programs in the Social Sciences, Media Studies, and International
Affairs), and potentially performance. The successful candidate will be
able to communicate and work with students and faculty from across the
University in the process of teaching Transdisciplinary Design.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong record of excellence in
teaching undergraduate and graduate level design studios as well as
lectures and seminars, preferably with experience in teaching in
international settings and will have a demonstrable commitment to
curricular innovation and experience with its implementation, as well as a
strong record of developing successful collaborative opportunities with
industry partners, non-profit organizations, NGOs, and other external
entities. Candidates with strong international experience in
crossdisciplinary, studio-based projects and/or design research
experience, and those who can provide leadership in fostering excellence
in design research and scholarship will be given priority. Applicants must
hold a professional/terminal degree in relevant fields.

This is a principal faculty position. The position will start in July
2008. Applicants who envision building an academic career at the New
School around professional/creative practice are expected to have an
ongoing, recognized, professional transdisciplinary design and/or
consulting practice; applicants who envision building an academic career
around research and scholarship must have a Ph.D. degree and demonstrate a
strong record of scholarly excellence and commitment to publishing in
their respective fields. Applicants who combine the above into an
integrative, research-driven practice committed to advancing critical
social and environmental issues are especially encouraged to apply.
