Royal Free and University College Medical School
Joint UCLH/UCL Biomedical Research Unit

Job Title: Research Associate - Senior Medical Statistician (UCL Grade 8)
Salary Scale: £33,779 to 40,335 plus London Allowance of £ 2,572
Accountable to: Dr Rumana Omar (Head, Biostatistics Group)

This is a new and exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced
Senior Medical Statistician to join the Biostatistics Group based within
the Biomedical Research Unit. The Biomedical Research Unit sits within
University College London (UCL) and the University College London
Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Trust and plays a pivotal role in enabling and
managing biomedical research. The research excellence of the UCL/H
partnership was recently recognised through an award of £85 million over 5
years within the NIHR programme “Best Research for Best Health” to found a
new Biomedical Research Centre. The Unit consists of 25 staff, including
clinical academics, a Biostatistics Group, Health Services Researchers,
Bioethicists and other project, administrative and finance staff. The Unit
is located at Maple House, Tottenham Court Road and is led by Professor
Ian Jacobs, Vice Dean of the UCL Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. The
Biostatistics Group plays an important role in ensuring high
methodological quality of Biomedical and Health Services Research in
UCL/H. There are currently four medical statisticians in the Biostatistics
Group which is led by Dr Rumana Omar, Reader in Medical Statistics.
Members of the group actively collaborate with health researchers on grant
applications and research projects. The Group’s significant contribution
to teaching health research methods includes the annual internationally
reputed short course “Practical Statistics for Medical Research”. The
Biostatistics Group’s work cuts across the 14 research themes of the newly
formed UCLH/UCL Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre and the health
services research programme. The Biostatistics Group has close links with
the UCL Department of Statistical Science.

You will advise and support health researchers within UCL/H to ensure the
best possible design, conduct, analysis and reporting of studies in
biomedical and health services research. You will also be required to be
involved in the sponsorship process of UCL/H trials and be expected to
teach on the MSc in Translational Clinical Research and other short
courses. There will be opportunities to undertake methodological research
where appropriate.

You should have a postgraduate degree in Statistics (preferably Medical
Statistics), with evidence of involvement in observational studies and
trials, ability to work independently and experience in teaching. This

working at the forefront of health research in the UK. The post is
