medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Someone back there in a different time zone mentioned that it would be
interesting to know the history of what it was said that Joseph did.
Jack Finnegan, /The Archaeology of the New Testament/ (Princeton, rev.
ed. 1992) comments (p.58) that "/The Childhood Gospel of Thomas/ . . .
says that Joseph was a carpenter and describes him as making ploughs and
yokes and a bed: and Justin (/Dialogue with Trypho/. . .) likewise
speaks . . . of Joseph the carpenter, as working as a carpenter and
making ploughs and yokes." Later( p. 76) he quotes Josephus on the
Galilee as saying "the land is everywhere so rich in soil and pasturage
and produces such variety of trees. . .."
Justin is 2nd C and the Gospel of T was known in the 2nd C.
