PLJ editorship
The editorial board of the Public Library Journal (PLJ) is looking for a
motivated and enthusiastic editor.
Published by the Public Libraries Group of CILIP, PLJ is the leading
periodical produced specifically for local authority libraries. With a
circulation of almost 6,500 in the UK and abroad, the journal is
published four times a year, and sent free of charge to members of the
Group. (See
http://www.cilip.org.uk/specialinterestgroups/bysubject/public/journal
for further details).
The aims of the journal are:
to provide high-quality material documenting issues regarding the
public library service in the UK
to provide an international perspective on public library issues, as
appropriate
to promote and disseminate examples of best practice
to disseminate academic research in the field of public librarianship.
The role of Editor: objectives
To organise Editorial Board Meetings (normally bi-annual)
To attend PLG Full Committee and Executive Board meetings as required,
and to disseminate issues from these to the Editorial Board.
To be ultimately responsible for the production of PLJ.
To make decisions regarding content, overall policy and strategy
regarding the Journal.
To oversee all aspects of production and distribution of PLJ and
liaise with Managing Editor, printers, distributors, subscription
agents, Advertising Manager.
To generate and follow-up ideas for articles and focus on making
content as timely, appropriate and accurate as possible.
To provide critical evaluation of content, format and direction.
To take an active role in succession planning, especially in terms of
the membership of the Editorial Board and in the mentoring of the future
Editor.
To market the Journal beyond its current readership and be an advocate
for membership of PLG.
The Editorial Board will support the Editor in achieving these key
objectives.
Expectations
The term of Editorship will normally be of three years duration, with a
possible extension, as agreed by the Editorial Board. The Editorial
Board requires:
a sound knowledge of the field of public librarianship
excellent organisational and communication skills
the ability to meet deadlines and effectively chase contributors
the ability to co-ordinate work across a dispersed Editorial Board
editorial, proof-reading and authoring skills (desirable).
Membership of CILIP (essential).
I have thoroughly enjoyed being editor of PLJ. The host of
opportunities, contacts and experiences that the post has brought me
have been of great benefit.
Obviously, keeping the Journal up and running alongside the day job
does bring a fair share of pressure, but my employees have been very
supportive and Ive not minded PLJ eating into the odd weekend. The
commitment basically boils down to circa half a day a week, with a day
or two more around deadline time.
The Editorial Board have given me great support and are always willing
to lend a hand. The PLG Committee too have always been positive and a
pleasure to work with.
Its certainly been a challenge at times but the people and the
fantastic articles/projects/research that weve been able to feature
have made it more than worthwhile.
