The Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA) is pleased to announce the
continuing annual competition for the ALBA George Watt Memorial prizes
for the best essays about the Spanish Civil War, the global anti-fascist
political or cultural struggles of the 1920s and 1930s, or the lifetime
histories and contributions of the Americans who fought in support of
the Spanish Republic from 1936-1938. At least two prizes of $500 each
will be awarded each year, one to the best undergraduate student work
and one to the best graduate student work on one or more of the above
topics. Work will be judged on the basis of originality, quality of
research, and effectiveness of argument or presentation. The work must
have been produced to fulfill an undergraduate or graduate course or
degree requirement. We welcome submissions from both U.S. and
international contestants. Essays may be submitted in English or Spanish.
The deadline for receipt of essays for 2008 is June 1, 2008. Works
produced either during the year of submission or during the previous
calendar year are eligible for the competition. Essays must be at least
5,000 words long to be considered for a prize.
Applicants should be sure to include a title page with name, address,

Award winners will be announced at the end of June. ALBA's Executive
Committee appoints the judges for the contest.

Premio de Ensayo Guerra Civil Española
Premio “George Watt” 2007
ALBA (Los Archivos de la Brigada Abraham Lincoln, EE.UU.) anuncia su
concurso de ensayo anual para estudiantes de licenciatura, maestría y
doctorado. El Premio “George Watt” será otorgado al autor del mejor
ensayo sobre la Guerra Civil Española, sobre los aspectos políticos o
culturales de la lucha mundial antifascista de los años 20 y 30, o sobre
las historias de los voluntarios estadounidenses que participaron en la
defensa de la República española entre 1936 y 1938.
El concurso se divide en dos categorías (estudiantes de licenciatura y
estudiantes de maestría o doctorado); se otorgará al menos un premio de
500 dólares en cada una. Los ensayos se evaluarán en base a la
originalidad y efectividad de los argumentos presentados. Sólo se
considerarán ensayos escritos para cumplir un requisito universitario.
Se invitan sumisiones norteamericanas e internacionales, escritas en
inglés o español. Para ser considerados, los ensayos deben tener un
mínimo de 5.000 palabras de extensión.
La fecha de entrega para el premio de 2008 es el 1 de junio del mismo
año; pueden someterse ensayos escritos durante 2007 ó 2008.
Las sumisiones deben estar acompañadas de una hoja que indique el nombre
y apellido del autor, su dirección, correo electrónico, y número de

El jurado es nombrado por el Comité Ejecutivo de ALBA; el fallo será
anunciado a finales de junio de 2008.
