medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
"Well, here is a reference to oil, as part of a mixture of sulphur, oil, pitch,
and tow, set on fire and hurled onto a siege tower"
Indeed, fire was used - frequently. But the question referred to what was poured through the openings in a machicolation gallery. BTW, if anyone could use such, I took a picture of such a gallery that clearly shows the holes and, I think, the walls below. If anyone wants an off-list copy (and if I can find the slide), I'll be happy to send. However, there are probably numerous such pix on line already. I offer b/c, for some reason, my students had an awful time wrapping their minds around the concept.
