medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
"The first Gothic structure was in a renovation
of Vezelay Cathedral in Paris under the the Abbot Suger..."
Sainte-Marie-Madeleine of Vézelay is an abbatial church in... Vézelay (Burgundy). It has a Romanesque nave and a Gothic apse. The church you're thinking of is the former abbey church of Saint-Denis, just outside of Paris. (It was/is a cathedral, I'm fuzzy on the details.) In fact, the town of S-D is really now a suburb of Paris, part of the "red belt" around the city, a locus of recent and probably future riots. Every time the natives get restless and start burning cars, I hold my breath. You'll find extensive pictures of Vézelay at www.art-roman.net, click on Bourgogne romane and then Vézelay. There are at least 7 pages of gorgeous photos.
