medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
It has been a while since I last had cause to be reading on the subject of eunuchs. I vividly recall finding the text 'On Defence of Euunuchs' by Theophylact of Ochrid a very fascinating insight into Byzantine attitudes to eunuchs. Theophylact (an archbishop) was not a eunuch himself but was defending his brother. It is in Greek (fairly clear from what I remember) but I was using a French translation - not sure about English translations (I thought about doing one - but not for very long). Margaret Mullett has been working on this text in some depth.
Alas, all my full references & notes were on the computer that died. But here's a link to Margaret Mullett's page http://www.byzantine-ahrb-centre.ac.uk/Staff/Margaret.htm
Best wishes (and Merry Christmas)
Nicola.
