medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The America Comparative Literature Association Conference, April 24-27
2008 in Long Beach California.
Theme: "Arrivals and Departures"
Our specific seminar stream title: "Entrances and Exits: Changing Roles
in Christianity"
Seminar Organizers: Sarah J. Adams, Azusa Pacific U, Emily Leverett,
Methodist U
Christianity is a religion predicated, in part, on the necessity for a
person to stop being one thing and become another - “unless ye be born
again, you cannot see God.” Beyond this most fundamental of role
changes, many other changes in role, position or perception were also
possible in the Church, as were instances of deliberate inclusion or
exclusion by authority. Saints were added to or removed from the canon.
Texts moved on and off the list of forbidden books and theologies could
move from heresy to doctrine, or back again. Smaller, more local changes
also occurred all the time; the election of a new abbot might go unnoted
by the church at large, but mean radical change for his particular
community.
This seminar seeks to explore the ways in which people enter and exit
religious institutions, practices, and ideologies and welcomes papers on
topics with time periods ranging from the Middle Ages to the Present
day. We seek papers that explore the ways in which religion is a
defining characteristic of a people, place, or time, through ideas of
sanctification, heresy, excommunication, reformation, exile, and/or
conversion. Papers which consider abstractions (such as the theology of
the Virgin Mary) or concrete elements (such as a particular text or
person) are welcome. Also welcome are papers dealing with issues of
syncretism and changes in Christianity created through contact with
other religions.
Papers should be no more than 20 minutes in length.
The ACLA is frequently looking to expand their conrference's coverage of
the Middle Ages, so papers in that time period are especially welcome.
However, they are not limited to that time, and the ACLA seeks to bring
together scholars from many disciplines and time periods. To submit an
abstract, please go to the ACLA website (www.acla.org/acla2008) and
click on "Propose a Paper or Seminar" and follow the links. There are
also other seminars proposed, so feel free to look at them, or to simply
submit a paper to the general pool. If you have any questions, I can be
