medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I think that the Italian "pietanza" is the same that the Spanish word
"pitanza". In medieval Castile, "pitanzas" were certain amounts of money
that the faithful paid the friars when they took part in burial ceremonies.
You can find more information on Castilian "pitanzas" in:
Iluminado SANZ, La Iglesia y el Obispado de Córdoba en la Baja Edad Media
(1236-1426), 2 vols., Madrid, 1989, p. 904,
or in my article
Francisco Javier ROJO ALIQUE, "El convento de San Francisco de Valladolid en
la Edad Media (h. 1220-1518). II: Los aspectos materiales", Archivo
Ibero-Americano 65 (2005), pp. 421-585, pp. 551-552.
