medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks, Brenda, sounds as though the two ceremonies were similar if not identical. Twelve peers of the realm were involved in the French king's ceremony, of which six (I think) were both dukes/counts-archbishops of various provinces. Each had an item to handle: ring, crown, spurs, gloves, etc. The archbp. of Reims, of course, got to do the anointing. There are gorgeous statues of these figures surrounding the huge reliquary (chasse) of Saint Remi in the basilica of the same name. They date from the 16th century (another "I think") and how they escaped the wrath of the Revolution escapes me.
