medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear coleagues
In his 'De sacramentis christiane fidei', Hugh of St Victor lists the six
'works of mercy' as found in Chap. 25 of St Matthew's gospel; Peter the
Chanter mentions the seventh, burying the dead, in the Verbum Abbreviatum.
Does anyone know how, when, why, by whom the seventh was added? - was it
just because everything else came in sevens?
And can anyone suggest an introduction to the Victorines, preferably in
English, tho' I can manage the odd chapter in French.
with thanks, Cate Gunn
