medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I imagine you know James of Vitry's account of how Mary of Oignies cut off a
piece of her own flesh (in her Vita) - what I've always thought interesting
was the shame she felt at what she'd done - she buried the piece of flesh
and her wound was not discovered until after her death - and that James
urges others not to follow Mary's extreme behaviour (in this and her
fasting).
best wishes, Cate

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello everyone,
I have a student working on his senior thesis about women's self mutilation,
and I was wondering if anyone could recommend some sources beyond the
obvious? I would appreciate any responses, and please feel free to email
off-list.
Michelle
