medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

And CC:
if you wanted no one save for heraldists to know what the hell you were
talking about, you *could* do that, certainly.
It's not that hard to learn the basic heraldic rules and nomenclature. It
can be easily done in a few days from a good manual by any academic. And
believe me: once you understand what part heraldry played in medieval life
some parts of it start becoming much clearer. IMO it's very useful for any
medievalist to learn he basics of heraldry. And it's even more useful for
art-hysterians, whom I have caught committing some frightful gaffs in that
area.
>A pillar completely covered with zigzags would be a barry-dancetty
pillar.
CC: doesn't sound all that structurally sound to me, Henk.
LOL
>And all pefectly in period, because these names date back to at least the
mid
to late 12th c.
CC: and are virtually unknown in the early 21st.
I agree, but see above.
CC: say, what do "chevrons" signify, in a heraldry context?
not "he who has traveled through portals," i trust.
It is not known what most heraldic charges 'mean' even if heraldic writers
since the 14th c have tried to attach meanings to them. Most of the time we
just don't know why people decided what they wanted to put on their shield.
Which, of course, left the field wide open for the lunatic fringe, who you
also come across in heraldry. They're just like real people...
The portal thingy as a symbol of a border between two worlds is a bit of an
open door (!). Every door is that: between inside and out, for example.
Sounds a bit art-hysteric to me, Chris. ;-)
