I think once you're into the world of electric start and auto start you are
looking at over £1k. All the little gennys have a hand pullcord start. The
more innovative amongst us could perhaps knock up an interesting remote for
this involving lengths of string, levers and counterweights... :-)

One could - and I am thinking of implementing this just now - do one thing:
Install in the server etc shutdown procedure a message sent via SMS to a
select number of mobiles. NHSnet facilitates this.
Alternative step up from there could be a message to an ethernet
connected switch which switches the generator on, but I am not sure how
to dop this exactly.
