A more selective (and inadequate) list of canonical avant-garde films
all less than one hour long in roughly chronological order:
Hans Richter: Rhythm 21
Leger/Murphy: Ballet Mecanique
Man Ray: Return to Reason
Vertov: Man with the Movie Camera ( a long short)
Joris Ivens: Rain
Marie Menken: Everything by her?
Deren/Hammid: Meshes of the Afternoon.
Margaret Tait: Portrait of Ga
Kurt Kren: TV, Baume in Herbst
Stan Brakhage: Riddle of Lumen
Michael Snow: Wavelength
Malcolm LeGrice: Berlin Horse
Peter Gidal: Clouds
Lis Rhodes: Dresden Dynamo
This list stops at around 1972, since when there has been a vast
proliferation of work, making it harder (and maybe too early) to
define a more recent canon.
