Call for Papers
Catherine Breillat: Women, Sex, Violence, Cinema
Saturday, 12th April, 2008
Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, London
Confirmed speakers:
Douglas Keesey, Professor of Film and Literature, Cal Poly, California , USA
Sarah Cooper, Lecturer in Film Studies, KCL
Catherine Grant, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies, University of Kent
Kate Ince, Reader in French Film and Gender Studies, University of Birmingham
The work of French filmmaker Catherine Breillat spans a period of three decades, though it is only in recent years, following the succès de scandale that was Romance (1999), that she has come to wider public and academic attention. Since then, Breillat's work has continued to attract attention, though detailed academic or theoretical exploration of her work has, for the most part, been somewhat lacking and remains dominated by Romance. It is with this in mind that we invite contributions to a conference examining Breillat's cinematic output from the 1970s to the present day. We would welcome explorations of the thematic or theoretical issues her work provokes. These could include, but are not confined to, the following areas or questions:
Breillat's approach to sex/sexuality/female desire
The portrayal and function of violence in Breillat's films
Adaptation and the relation of film to text
The questions of authorship in Breillat's work
Feminist approaches to Breillat's work.
Censorship and/or extreme cinema
Constructions of the female/feminine
Philosophical/theoretical/ethical approaches to Breillat's work Adolescent sexuality Relations between the sexes/sexual politics
Please email proposals of approximately 200 words to the conference organisers by Monday 19 November 2007.
