Our new seminar 'Mastering Profound Knowledge' debuts on 28th & 29th November 2007
This seminar is aimed at those who have attended "A practical introduction to the Deming Philosophy" and who wish to deepen their understanding of Dr Deming's work, and who wish to "operationalise" the view of the world that the System of Profound Knowledge represents.
Whilst there will be some coverage of the story of Dr Deming's teaching to provide context to the seminar, the emphasis will be very much on
the application of Profound Knowledge to 21st Century issues.
This is a fun, interactive, intensive 2-day session to deepen your understanding and broaden your practical application. It will challenge you to apply Dr Deming's teachings to your own position in your organisation, and to develop a strategy to widen the influence his management method has on your work and on your life away from the office. The aim is for you to pick up the System of Profound Knowledge and run with it as an effective and powerful theory of management for you to achieve the transformation that you seek.
The course agenda will be around Henry Neave's book "The Deming Dimension" and attendees will receive a copy of the book with their registration. Delegates are asked to bring along an issue or case study from within their own organisation that the group can explore using the System of Profound Knowledge. The aim of this is
(i) to help their learning by using an issue with which they are familiar
(ii) to allow them to leave the seminar with greater insight and a new perspective enabling them to address the situation with greater insight and aplomb.
As a result of attending this seminar you will:
· Deepen your comprehension of The System of Profound Knowledge. It is an elegant and effective Theory of Management. It is a framework of thought and guide for action that any leader wishing to transform their organisation into one that will thrive and survive through the current century would do well to heed. It requires investment and tenacity, but the output versus the effort is well worth it.
· Extend your insight and wisdom of the four components of Profound Knowledge:
Ø Appreciation for a System: taking a holistic view of the organisation: how does the wider system fit together in terms of its customers, suppliers, employees, managers, shareholders, and the world around it? What is the aim of the system and what needs to happen to optimise the system the benefit for all players. The need for co-operation so not to advantage any one part of the system to the detriment of others.
Ø Knowledge of Variation: this requires a view of numbers that is not well appreciated by managers, nor is it taught very widely in the business schools. This is about using statistics to gain new insights into business performance and to drive improvements in a sustainable way; it is about Special and Common Causes of Variation and how the wrong reaction to either makes things worse; it is about how variability spreads like a virus through systems, increasing waste and reducing the reliability of product and service.
Ø Theory of Knowledge seeks to show managers that their focus should be on the future of the system - improvement of existing product and existing process; innovation for new products and services to meet the future needs of customers; innovation for new processes to deliver products and services. Thus the job of management is that of prediction; managers should be constantly and systematically learning about what is necessary for future success.
Ø Some aspects of Psychology: how people react to the way systems are designed and managed: an understanding of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation - optimising a system means that natural motivation needs to be encouraged and enabled in life at work. People who have "Joy in Work" are people most likely to join in the development and improvement of the whole organisation.
Ø And the Interactions between the components: The four components of Profound Knowledge are not independent; in fact the interactions between them are probably more important that each of them individually. The performance of anyone is largely governed by the system they work in, which is the responsibility of management. Yet people's desire to "do well" will generally cause them to try to "do well", if necessary by finding ways around the system, when really it is the system itself that is in need of reform.
There will be interactive exercises to aid learning and we will revisit some of the experiments that Dr Deming used to demonstrate his philosophy.
The title "Mastering Profound Knowledge" carries a contradiction in itself. Dr Deming wrote that the System of Profound Knowledge is a map of theory by which to understand the organisations that we work in. Once you understand this theory of management, you will find yourself applying its principles in every kind of relationship with other people, yet "One does not need to be eminent in any part ....in order to understand it and to apply it".
So the seminar will
a.. Be pertinent to you and your organisation
b.. Deepen your knowledge, understanding and mastery
c.. Develop your theories with others for mutual benefit
d.. Allow you the depth of awareness to deal with the obstacles and fads in your current circumstances
e.. Give you an agenda and plan for achievement in your own situation
f.. Be a fun and creative learning experience
We hope you will want to take part in this seminar and we have attached a flyer and booking form. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Sincerely
Lotte Coombe
