The Belgian Mu Group wrote a book using Hjelmslev's model in 1970, translated in 1981 as "A general Rhetoric" (Johns Hopkins UP). It can definitely serve as a framework for a comparative semiology of narrative media...

About translation from the graphic novel to cinema, I just tutored a dissertation using the model of glossematics by Louis Hjelmslev, who in his Prolegomena to a theory of language (Denmark, 1943) distinguishes between substance and form of the expression, and substance and form of the contents. Once you distinguish these semiotic levels in graphic narrative and in film narrative, you are able to establish with precision what is transformed, what is created, what remains the same, and what is lost. The paper was on Frank Miller's work, with a good support on his recent book-lenght conversation with Will Eisner, the dean of avant-garde expressionism in graphic narrative since the early fifties.Dr. Lauro Zavala

does anyone have any recommendations for a student who'd like to do some serious research on the [possible] relationship between cinema and graphic novels . . . there's an endless amount on adapting conventional novels for the screen but how about adapting graphic novels? . . . and does anyone write about the influence of graphic novels on recent cinema?
all suggestions very much appreciated
