I am interested to know if there are films in Korean cinema which either alludes to Catholicism, or explicitly takes Catholicism as a strand of thought in its plot. So far, I have caught references to Catholicism in the revenge trilogy of Park Chan Wook, especially "Old Boy" and "Sympathy for Lady vengeance", and also the background of Catholicism against the Donghak neo-Confucian school of learning in Choseon dynasty Korea,as well as the stigmatization of Catholics in 19th century Choseon Korea. Have there been any other films which members here can think of which references Catholicism or Catholic beliefs and practices, and also, are any members here aware of the secondary material of criticism on the relations between Roman Catholicism and Korean cinema?
Sincerely,
Kevin Jang
