Hi Ilja,
Maybe I'm a heretic, but at Nikhef we've been running very happily for
ages with CentOS 3 (and 4+ as well). Like the original RedHat commercial
version, security updates are supported until 2010. And you can just
migrate an existing RHEL3-based system (like SLC3) to CentOS in a few
steps as explained here:
http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=19
Of course, you could use similar steps to move to move to ScientificLinux
(plain version), but thay appear to also drop their support well before
the "official" end-of-line for the RedHat RHEL3.
A few packages that have been "added" to the original RedHat version by the
SLC3 people you can copy over from the current SLC3 site, or alternatively
you can add the current SLC3 repository at the end of the repository
list, after the CentOS ones. That way, you'll at least be sure that the
security of the base packages is OK.
In general, CentOS is a "true" rebuild of the RHEL sources, and the
CentOS community commit to the same EoL as RedHat ... and it's a very
active and supporting community.
Enjoy CentOS!
Cheers,
DavidG.
