If you don't trust the government that collects that statistics, you might
be inclined to suspect that any data they collect will be matched against
tax or social security records and that the government releases data in
pursuit of its own objectives. I don't think most people are as aware as
we might like of the precautionsin place to preclude release of
identifiable data nor is it widely understood that the ruling class's
agenda requires robust and reliable statistics, not that those are
necessarily the ones released to the public.

A very orthodox presentation. Like many others Besley 'explains' lack
of trust in statistics in terms of falling trust in government.
Does anyone know of any evidence that gives direct to support this
hypothesis?
'Government' manifests itself in words and statements that can be
ambiguous, selective, not easily checkable. Statistics are
systematically collected information. they are presented in precise
terms, they are usually published in terms of series so they are
historically checkable. Inconsistencies can be identified with
precision.
So what is the connection between trust in statistics and trust in
government?
