There is work on this in the literature but before I post you to that your question comes as I try to complete analysis of the intersections or design research and practice (including industrial design) that 53 design educators in a technology new university see. This qualitative (interview) analysis, which I hope to complete by years end, will show how this group rationalizes that gape between design and practice in ways that are relevant to your work. It will also show that the broader design professions are aware of this gap and it recurs in national design reviews and other professional reports on the intersection between tertiary education and design practice in Australia. I am sure others on the list will also point you to the literature that I have reviewed on this. Gavin Melles.
