medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
CALL FOR PAPERS:
2nd Hagiotheca Conference
Identity and Alterity in the Making and Practice of Cults
Split, May 28 – June 1 2008
The second conference organized by the Croatian hagiography association Hagiotheca is focusing on exploring the concepts of identity and alterity in the context of hagiography and the broader field of devotional practices.
We plan to examine both the use of hagiography and devotion in the process of defining the political/cultural/religious Other and the way that this Other influenced the actual religious practice, as well as the impact of these processes on the construction of self-identity. The identity in question ranges from the level of various types of social groups to civic, regional, ethnic, and religious identity.
Thus, the general topics include, but are not limited to:
- Genesis and development of hagiographical topoi referring to the Other
- Creation of identity “under pressure” (war circumstances, threat of/to emerging social groups and religious movements, etc.) by inventing or re-inventing cults, innovations or changes in religious practice, cases in which a cult may serve as the factor of group homogenization
- Strategies of domination/assimilation of the Other through devotional practices
- Development of double/multiple identity – notably the appearance of trans-confessional elements in “peripheral” regions
- Elements of alterity in female sainthood and devotion
- Official language: English
- The organizer agrees to cover accommodation expenses on half-board basis
- No registration fee is charged
- Publication of proceedings is planned
A half-page abstract (of a 20 minutes paper) in English language should be submitted by January 15 2008 to [log in to unmask]
