Hi all,
We would like to alert members of this list to the all new DCMI
Community for Scholarly Communications [1] established at the recent
DCMI Advisory Board meeting in Singapore. The aim of the group is to
provide a central place for individuals and organisations to exchange
information, knowledge and general discussion on issues relating to
using Dublin Core for describing items of 'scholarly communications', be
they research papers, conference presentations, images, data objects.
With digital repositories of scholarly materials increasingly being
established across the world, this group would like to offer a home for
exploring the metadata issues faced.
The group is moderated by Rosemary Russell (UKOLN) and Julie Allinson
(University of York). As moderators, we would like the group to be
useful for both technical and non-technical discussions, and for both
new and established metadata practitioners. Although the focus in on
Dublin Core, we would also hope that other metadata formats and profiles
can be discussed in a neutral and helpful way.
With the development of the Dublin Core Abstract Model [2] and the
Description Set Profile , Dublin Core has moved a long way from the '15
elements' of simple DC and now offers a framework for describing just
about any kind of resource [3]. Recently in the UK this Dublin Core
framework has been used to develop an application profile for describing
Scholarly Works (SWAP) [4], funded by JISC. The DCMI Scholarly
Communications Community has a close relationship with the creators of
that profile and hopes to support the implementation of SWAP by
providing a place for discussion and a home for future work. JISC are
funding other application profile work in the UK for images and
time-based media - scholarly resources that also fall within the remit
of the DCMI Scholarly Communications Community. Internationally,
projects like DRIVER [5] and Object Re-use and Exchange [6] have
significant interest in metadata issues. Representatives from both
projects have already joined.
You can join the Community by signing up to our JISCMAIL list, linked
